Custom Band Organ Idea For Jantzen Beach Carousel
By Andrew Lardieri

This is just a dream or thought that popped up in my head due to
the fact that Restore Oregon hasn't taken the time to consider a new
home for the Jantzen Beach "Super Parker" (one of the most opulent
and gorgeous carousels I have observed), the only one of five still
remaining and that is depressed in storage for the time.

Anyway, this fantasy idea came to me in a dream and I hope you enjoy
and maybe consider pitching it to Restore Oregon and, who knows, maybe
the Jantzen Beach carousel will once again be a crucial project and
once again be a highlight for many Oregonians and people in the
Portland area.

My idea is that, once Restore Oregon hopefully receives a grant from the
city of Portland or elsewhere that will not only build a new pavilion
for the ride to be housed, it also could have a new custom-built band
organ to provide hours of joyful music to passersby and carousel riders.

And, given the fact that this machine is so grandiose and expensive
looking, it should be worthy of a replica organ that would have been
used on top end 4-abreast carousels like this one. There is already one
replica Wurlitzer style 165 band organ that was commissioned for a
private owner out in California,

I think that another Wurlitzer 165 replica should do the trick quite
nicely since Wurlitzer manufactured the model 165 organ for large
carousels and dance halls, etc. A replica organ in California was
manufactured by Bruce Newman, a mechanical music instrument restorer
in Gold Beach, Oregon, not too far from Portland. So if Restore Oregon
wishes to pitch my idea to get this ball rolling I'm sure Bruce would
be happy to consider it.

The tricky part, however, would be finding a façade for this fantasy
band organ idea I have right now as the façade for other 165 replicas
came from a Mexico based carving shop. (But who knows; only time will
tell and maybe something might come about.) The next façade for this
organ would be painted with scenes from the old Jantzen Beach amusement
park as a nod to Portland's nostalgia.

I will definitely consider suggesting this to Restore Oregon as well
as having Bruce look over this article and get his opinion.

[ "The Jantzen Beach Carousel is a four-abreast, C.W. Parker 'Superior
[ Park' model machine. Measuring a whopping 67 feet in diameter, it
[ was specifically designed for permanent installation rather than
[ traveling use, and is one of only a handful of such elaborate,
[ oversized park-model carousels ever built. ... Restore Oregon placed
[ the carousel on our Most Endangered Places list, joining scores of
[ other historic properties across the state identified as being in
[ imminent danger of loss due to economic challenges, development
 [ pressures, demolition or neglect."
