Wind Supply for 1925 Tangley Calliaphone
By Don Taig

Hi MMDers, I have a fully restored 1925 Tangley Calliaphone using an
original Roots blower and electric motor. The noise of the Roots will
be an issue in the new area I'm about to install it in. I am interested
in connecting with any of you that have dispensed with the Roots blower
and used, say, an organ blower instead.

I have an organ blower that has been supplying air to an Aeolian
Orchestrelle Model XY and I am thinking of using it as a replacement.
I haven't determined its equivalent air supply yet, but I suspect it
is close.

An issue is the Roots blower returns the air supply from the Calliaphone
back to itself via an inlet on the top of the blower with a spill valve.
The organ blower only has a flap door that opens to suck air into the
blower to supply the organ; excess is sent to atmosphere.

It is the closed system of the Roots blower compared to the organ blower
that is of interest to me. Whilst the organ blower still makes noise it
has less moving parts compared to the Roots blower and can be further
silenced in an acoustic padded chamber. Any help would be great.

Kind regards to all,

Don Taig

[ The traditional pipe organ built after 1900 is usually fitted
[ with a centrifugal fan or "turbine blower". See, for example,

 [
[ A Roots "blower" is a positive displacement rotary lobe pump
[ that operates by pumping a fluid with a pair of meshing lobes.
[ It can simultaneously provide wind pressure for the brass pipes
[ as well as suction to operate the roll player. The design was
[ patented in 1860 by the Roots brothers. Ref.:

 [
[ "You can hear the sound at more than 1/4 mile away. The Excursion
[ Boat Special produces a higher volume, and in fact, sounds out
[ a mile away. The music draws any ear in range. In other words,
[ the Calliope is the best advertising tool ever invented!"

 [
[ If a Tangley Calliaphone was originally equipped with a Roots
[ blower for use in parades, you can be assured that the sound made
[ by the calliope will overpower any perceived noise made by the
[ Roots blower and its internal combustion engine. I know -- I've
[ played deafening "cal-li-opes" in many parades. Visit the MMD
