Four-foot-wide "Piano Roll" at eBay Auction

An item on eBay is titled ANTIQUE GERMAN AMERICAN PIANO PLAYER ROLL.
The only use I can think of for what I see is as some kind of aid to
playing the piano.
If someone knows what it's for or has another idea I'd love to hear
about it !
