Piano Rolls Based On Phonograph Recordings
By Piotr Barcz

I'm sure many of you have recognized phonograph recordings of tunes
that were featured on piano rolls that were the arrangements the rolls
were based on. I think a great example is the Bing Crosby recording of
"Sweet Is The Word For You" from 1937 (the soundtrack from the movie it
was featured in) which Frank Milne adapted (introduction and all) into
the "Sweet Is The Word For You/Blue Hawaii" medley roll produced in
the Ampico 21 series.

An example I finally figured out is the 1930s piano roll of "Smoke
Gets In Your Eyes", played by J. Lawrence Cook. (I have it, it's great,
but needs to run at Tempo 45 to even be singable!) It is based on the
arrangement used in the film adaptation of "Roberta" from 1935 that
features Irene Dunne singing it; the intro and ornamentation were
copied directly: https://youtu.be/gkQU-VQkhGw

I've always thought it was rather interesting how many of these
arrangements can be traced back to an actual orchestral recording or
other source. Fats Waller tunes on piano rolls are a good example too.

I urge others to share rolls and their respective parent arrangements!
It's a cool part of our mechanical music world that I think is
understated.
