A "postscript" to my message a couple of days ago [25.10.01 MMD]:
the Ampico roll boxes I seek are to replace large (but no jumbo)
roll boxes.
In answer to Robbie's questions, the outside dimensions of these
boxes (when the lids are on) are 3 inches wide and 2.8 inches high,
to contain a roll with spool diameter around 2.55 inches. The boxes
are of course about 12.65 inches long.
Obviously the dimensions are not terribly critical if replacement
boxes are sought, but excessively large ones will waste space, and
ones which are significantly too small won't fit the spools!
I think Rich Ingram said [in 25.09.08 MMD] that no more "top hat"
boxes are available, but for completeness the originals are 2.25
inches wide and (again) 2.8 inches high and the same length as the
large boxes, to contain a roll of spool diameter around 1.9 inches.
The two main sizes of box were clearly made with these dimensions so
they would look neat when the boxes were mixed on a shelf, though that
nicety has generally been neglected when re-issues have been made.
I hope that helps to clarify.
Kind regards to all (from a very rainy East Midlands, UK, as we
await Storm Amy)
