After 60+ years of collecting piano rolls, I have just encountered
something I have never seen: a Supertone "Movie" Series roll (#866789,
see attached photo).
What is curious about this roll is the rather bizarre medley of songs
included on it:
1. Russian Kossak
2. Mazeltof
3. Minuet
4. Highland Fling - Blue Bells of Scotland
5. Sailor's Hornpipe
6. Irish Washerwoman - Wearin' of the Green
7. Italian Tarantella - Funiculi-Funicula
8. Wacht am Rhein - Lauterbach
9. La Marseillaise
10. Here Comes the Bride
11. Mendelsohn's Wedding March
12. Swanee River
13. Dixieland
14. America
"Irish Washerwoman" combined with "Here Comes the Bride"? "Russian
Kossack" partnered with "America"?? Really??? (Unfortunately, I don't
have a working 88-note player right now on which to try it out.)
Clearly, this is an early roll. Here is what I speculate (and it is
purely speculation): Supertone was trying to enter the lucrative
photoplayer market. This roll was intended as a "catch all" roll for
whatever might be on the movie screen. The operator could use the
photoplayer's fast forward/reverse features to get to the theme that
they needed.
Does anybody know anything more about Supertone "Movie" Series rolls?
Thanks!
