New Century Disc Musical Box Tunelists
By Kevin McElhone

I retired from working full-time with mechanical musical instruments last
weekend, so I now have time to pursue other unfinished research projects.
First, I want to see if I can update the tune lists for the six types of
New Century disc musical boxes.

There are four types of 18 inch discs numbered in the 4,000, 6,000, 7,000
and 8,000 series which are played on different comb configurations.

About thirty years ago, Coulson Conn, from the USA and a Musical Box
Society G.B. committee member, published lists in the M.B.S.I. magazine
with the help of at least 12 other owners as follows:

4,000-main list: Vol 33, No.2, page 20
6,000-main list: Vol 29, No.1 Spring/Summer 1983, page 35
      additional titles: Vol 29, No.1 Spring/Summer 1983, Page 16
      additional titles: Vol 30, No.1, Page 55
7,000 main list: Vol 35, No.1 Spring 1989, page 5
8,000 main list: Autumn 1987, page 44

Despite researching these boxes myself for 15 years, I have found serial
numbers of only 82 surviving New Century 18 inch boxes, and have
published them in the Musical Box Society G.B. books, "The Disc Musical
Box", and it's 100-page supplement. If you have or know of an instrument
in a museum which is not on this list, do please let me know and I will
publish additional information in a few months time.

I would also be interested to receive any titles of the rare 11 inch
discs (only one instrument known to me) and the 15 inch size as well.

Thank you,
Kevin McElhone
