Software, Punches, and MIDI
By Jody Kravitz

Philip Jamison raised the question, and it was seconded by Dave Clark,
as to whether I have plans on publishing the software I wrote to
convert MIDI scores to printed perforation templates. Yes, sort of.

First, however, a comment on netiquette. Traditionally advertising has
tended to be discouraged on the Internet. This is especially true of
unsolicited mailings. I get some of these because my e-mail address has
been listed in conference attendee lists. It can be annoying, and unlike
3rd class US junk mail, you can't use it in your fireplace. I hope that
when the discussion of parts, tools, or instruments for sale occurs
in this mailing list that the recipients of this list will consider this
useful information rather than annoying junk mail.

The second issue is in regards to my role as "editor" of this mailing
list. When I offerred Terry Smythe to support this mailing list on my
computer, I didn't initially expect to actually be editing it into digests.
Now that I am, I feel a bit more self-conscious about discussing the sale of
software I wrote than if I was just another of the participants. I will
not discourage (or block) the discussion of other techniques or products
that produce the same result as software that I've written.

Now that that's said, let me explain what's going on with my software. All
the software I have related to automatic musical instruments is pretty much
a result of my working with things in Mike Ames' collection. In particular
the perforation "template" program was spec'd out and tested by David Wasson.
Its the only thing so far that we think as appeal outside of Mike's collection.
David has essentially been acting as my "agent" to sell it, and to provide
customer support. This leaves me free to do my "day job" during the day and
to work on music stuff in the evening and on the weekend. We're still adding
features by request, if those features look like they'd be useful to more than
one user. I'd invite those interesting in learning more about the program
to call David at 619-481-1663 beteen 7:30am and 2:30pm Pacific time.
