Two Bartok Rolls Found
By Robbie Rhodes

Re: "REQUEST of Bartok rolls", from Janos Macsai (digest 950515),
seeking Welte roll numbers 7768, 7791, 7767, 7785.

These four rolls, recorded by Welte Licensee, are the only known
piano roll recordings made in America by the important Hungarian
composer and pianist, Bela Bartok. (Data from "The Welte-Mignon, its
music and musicians," by Charles Davis Smith, (C) 1994 AMICA, publ.
by Vestal Press.)

Using original production copies of two of these rolls, Wayne
Stahnke has transcribed, translated (Welte Licensee emulation) and
played them on the SE grand piano at his studio:

C-7768 Evening in the Country; Ballade, No. 6 - Bartok (3/28)
    C-7791 Ballade No's 7,8,9,10,12,14 and 15 - Bartok (5/28)

"These are particularly fine examples of Welte Mignon (Licensee)
recordings in America, and they sound very natural," Stahnke
commented. He said he will continue searching for the other two
rolls, and he would like to hear from Macsai and Janosy. His new
address is:
