Yea......    Tubing is clear, signal gets through OK to the unit,
and there is vacuum at 7T on the unit.   Pouch is not perforated,
valve faces just fine and appear to seat like supposed to.    I'm
beginning to wonder if the right thing to do is to tear the unit
apart and restore it again; shouldn't take more than a day.   I
suspect I may find some kind of leakage through the wood itself,
a crack, possibly the pores, or possibly a bad gasket.

Have you ever built a bench jig to test Ampico expression units?
I've still got about 6 more Ampico's to do, may be useful to
build something like that.
