Pratt-Read Player Pouch Replacement
By Les Smith

Hi, Larry. Stop torturing yourself trying to use zephir shin and hide
glue on those Pratt-Read pouches. Use pouch leather, instead, and glue
them in place with an aliphatic resin "yellow" glue such as Elmers or
Titebond which will give you much more working time before it starts to
set. Apply the glue with a small, disposable artists brush (I get the
20 for a buck). Since leather IS more porous than zephir skin, after the
pouches are installed seal them with a couple of thin coats of diluted
rubber cement applied with a similar artists brush. The most commonly
used rubber cement is "Carter's" and it should be thinned 50/50 with
either Carter's own thinner or naptha. After the rubber cement has dried,
dust the pouches LIGHTLY with some talc powder-- your chance to use yet
another artists brush--and blow away the excess. Sealing the pouches will
render the leather more airtight and eliminate the need to replace the
bleeds. Trying to replace those pouches with zephir shin and hot glue is
about as much fun as do-it-yourself root canal work! So use pouch leather
as described above and RELAX. This is your hobby and you're supposed to
enjoy it!
