Hi All,

Although I rarely post to this forum I follow it often. My job
consumes much of my time but when I can, I'll post my background.
Like many people, I too am interested in scanning rolls and the
Visioneer scanner (also remarketed by HP) caught my attention.

I contacted the company and at this time, they are not interested
in any variations of their product. The scanner is limited to
a scan of 8.5x30". Not by the software but by the hardware
(memory) in the scanner and the physical width of the optical
element in the scanner head. The scanner uses a Mitsubishi
device #P8R216L2 which can provide 200DPI resolution. I've
contacted Mitsubitshi in California to determine if 14" devices
are available. The rep wasn't sure if a wider device was available
and said he'd contact Japan and get back to me.

The optical device is called a "contact image sensor" and is
available in 104mm and 216mm devices at either 200 or 400 DPI.
Mitsubishi also has an interface chip to make the electronics
a little easier. I don't have the interface chip specifications
yet.

If the device is available in longer configurations, I believe
it would be ideal for an optically based roll scanner. The next
most logical sizes Mitsubishi could manufacture are possibly
a 280mm unit or a 355mm unit which would correspond to 11"
and 14".

I enjoy following the forum! I wish everyone a Merry Christmas
and a Happy New Year!
