Roll Archival as AMICA or MBSI Project
By Bill Chapman

Terry [Smythe] as I read your msg about preserving rolls by a
funded, larger scale operation I had a couple thoughts. If
there were an AMICA/MBSI or other group project, it would be
great because the paper is deteriorating on the rolls we own and
play. But its my hope that the optical reading of rolls by a
modified scanner will work so everyone interested could do it at
home. That way many more digital copies would exist, and would
possibly have a wider scope of music preserved. If the efforts
for development of the machinery is in favor the homeowner, then
I suspect that many of us would be sharing our digitized rolls
via internet. What fun!¶
The downside of individuals doing this is the lack of set
standards (although the scanners are likely to become uniform as
well as the MIDI format). What is possible is that a lot of
enhancements or alterations may tend of occur as the rolls are
zipped from one person to another, and pretty soon (200 years)
it would be hard to tell which were the REAL copies of the roll.

Either way, I'm hoping that I'll get some of my favorites in
MIDI format.¶
