Music Roll Editing Programs
By Karl Petersen

Great subject, and Robbie's right on the mark regarding project size.

The metronome structuring was made semi-automatic by the Hickman team at
Ampico. The beginning of each beat was marked and the stretch and
compression necessary to make even beats were mechanically created by
changing the speed ratio between the recording and the next-master. This
was supposedly only done on dance arrangements, i.e. fox trots, but would
still be a good tool currently unavailable.

The editor Robbie is using shows the piano roll in sheet-music
orientation, that is, it is a view of the bottom side of the roll with
the tab on the left. This might be fine for those doing sheet music,
while the vertical spool-box orientation might be better for the casual
roll-handler who is not sheet-music wise. (hopefully not unmusical!) An
option to view in either mode could be valuable.

Especially note the tracker hole offset and percussion
strike-when-the-note-hole-closes questions. These are very music-roll
specific.

OK, Jody, what are you going to title the spin-off thread on CO2 laser
roll cutting?

Enthused in Idaho---Karl.
