Carl Frei Archives
By Matthew Caulfield

I received yesterday from Europe the complete list (68 p.) of
the Keller & Kern patterns from the Carl Frei archives.

Translated, the introduction says: "In 1993 we took over the
complete music archive of Carl Frei, Jr. It comprises
chiefly original patterns preserved from various Waldkirch
band organ manufacturers. The archive also contains new
patterns, with new ones being added constantly. Copies can be
made in roll or book form by traditional methods on the one
hand; on the other hand we have lately developed the
capability of reading the original patterns into MIDI
format. This new technique allows us to re-arrange" the
music for organ scales for which the original music was not
intended or to undertake modifications to the tunes. If you
wish to order music, confer with us beforehand concerning the
various scale parameters and physical form for the music.. The
purchase of music from us--regardless of form--does not permit
further reproduction by the purchaser. Further information
from: Gerhard Kern, Am Ziegelgrund 26, D-50170 Kerpen-Buir,
Germany". Tel. 02275-6778. Fax 02275-4783"

The list gives 400 tunes for the Bruder model 107, 394 tunes for
the Bruder model 111, 183 tunes for the 41-35 key Carl Frei
scale, 123 tunes for the 90-125 key Carl Frei, 251 for the 89
key Gavioli, 3880 for the 33 key Ruth, 130 for the 38 key
Ruth. Tunes for the other scales are in numbers under 100
tunes each, generally 30 or 40 or so tunes, but only 1 or 2 or
under 10 tunes for some scales. The numbers I have given are
approximate due to my hasty counting and due to duplicate
entries in the list, occasionally obvious computer input
errors but more often multiple arrangements of a given tune.
For many tunes the length of the tune in meters are given. I
think one can judge the approximate age of the arrangement from
the serial number assigned to the tune. Occasionally the
composer or arranger is named, particularly for the Carl-
Frei-scale tunes.

[ Editor's note: Shortly after receiving this message, I received
[ another message which I'm including verbatim, as I enjoyed the way
[ Matthew stated the problem.

Jody,

I just sent from home via my office Email a message to the list
about the Carl Frei catalog. The note escaped into cyberspace
before I could finish the last line, which intends to say that I
will send copies of the catalog to those who Emailed me asking
for one. Could you please edit it and add the missing words?
Thanks.
