Fisher-Price
By Karl Petersen

My wife Robin and I likewise bought one of these for our son, but we
enjoyed the box more than anyone.

After trying to cast a duplicate disk and being troubled by the shrinkage
in the epoxy casting, I machined a disk blank out of cast epoxy and
pinned a tune. Schumann's piece emulating Chopin. It was pretty good but
too short.

I decided a more rewarding exercise would be to attach set of pouches
tracker to a decently large comb from an otherwise junk music box, and
compose from a pneumatic organ keyboard and play from rolls. This was
probably as complicated an idea now as it was then, but I have often
imagined the possibility of obtaining hand-played music with the sounds of
a fine music box, and playing from rolls is the next obvious step. I know
none of us would be satisfied with an electronic emulation of the sound!
