Herman Chittison
By Marc Sachnoff

Folks:
Just got through playing a great CD called "Swing Piano Bar" a French
issue on Fremeaux and Associes SA in Paris. Its an anthology of piano
solos including Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Earl Hines, Art Tatum et al.
Wonderful stuff with an emphasis on stride playing. Unfortunately, the
liner notes are in French and that's a language which I don't speak.

Why am I relating this to our Automatic Music Digest? The disc includes
some selections by a pianist named Herman Chittison, a performer whose
style is similar to Art Tatums with dramatic runs and tempo changes.
The question is did Chittison ever record any piano rolls? He may have
lived for a certain period in the 1930s in Paris and London. Perhaps he
may have recorded over there.

Anyone have any information on him?

Thanks.

Keep up the good work, Jody. [ Twice in one digest. Thanks! ]
