Update to Roll Sources (Digest 96.07.11)
By Paul Johnson

Larry:

It's good to see that you're making up a list of alternative roll
sources.

Here's my update on some of the sources:

Mike Schwimmer: Hasn't offered anything in the last 18 months but
could do so. The address is correct

Dan Inglima: The address looks correct and I believe he is still
holding auctions.

Ragtimes: This is Joel Markowitcz and I do not believe he has done a
roll auction in a number of years. He focuses on sheet music auctions
now.

Rag Daddy's Music: I believe he is based out of Colorado now but I
don't have an updated address handy. Can anyone else supply?

Regarding the Piano Roll Center:

Our address is:

The Piano Roll Center
26390 Big Valley Rd., NE
Poulsbo, WA 98370
Phone: (360) 697-2422
Fax: (360) 697-2522
E-Mail: 76651.1710@compuserve.com

I bought the business from Mike Schwimmer a couple of years ago and we
are still doing regular auctions like Mike did (about 400 rolls listed
every other month). The auctions include all types of reproducing, 88
note, Nickelodeon rolls and any other odd ball stuff I run into.

We're continuing to do the Hot Piano Classics - hot jazz and ragtime
arranged from original recordings by the greats (Waller, Johnson,
Morton etc.), and have added a new line - Ragged Recollections which
focuses mostly on rags that were never cut on roll. I also just
released a catalog of 90 items including Ampico, Duo-Art, Welte and 88
note ragtime, jazz and blues. I'll be glad to send you a copy and if
you're interested.

As for myself, I became interested in ragtime about 22 years ago and the
rolls followed about 5 years after that. Ed Sprankle helped mentor me
along and taught me a great deal about the rolls, artists and
everything else that went with it. I was very fortunate to find him
early on. Many other people have been helpful too. I personally enjoy
ragtime, jazz, blues, one steps and hot pops (hot performances of pop
tunes from the teens, twenties and thirties) as well as Mae Brown
arranged rolls on US Music.

I really enjoy getting the updates and hearing what people have to
say. Hope this all helps.
