Advertising In The Digest
By Paul Johnson

Here are some of my thoughts about advertising in the digest.

First, an ad is an exchange of information. Like any of the articles
in the digest, some may be useful to the reader and some may not. I've
certainly spent more time scrolling through articles that are not of
interest than I've spent zipping past ads.

This doesn't mean I think that the digest should be opened up to
further advertising. I don't think that vendors should be able to hawk
their wares over the digest. By and large, we haven't really seen this
happen. Digest readers have access to the vendors list and they can
contact them if they are interested in a specific product.

I recently advertised some Regina disks because they were not part of
my regular line. More importantly I hope to link them up with a good
home (I figured they were better off with someone's machine than in a
recycling bin someplace).

Like you Jody, I find ads a part of the useful information of the
digest and I've responded to some. Perhaps in the future you can set
up a separate area for them but for now, folks seem to be showing the
necessary restraint. Keeping them down to no more than 3 - 4 sentences
of information is probably a good guideline.
