Craig Brougher's response to my letter on crazing lacquer is right on.
Unfortunately, manufacturers have no way to time-test a finish.
Mohawk came out, many years ago, with a lacquer for brass.  I used it
on a brass bed, and it crazed about a month later.  After talking with
them about it (evidently I want not the only disgruntled customer) they
changed the formula and have now, what I consider to be, one of the
best brass lacquers on the market.

The lacquer that was on the box that I mentioned in my previous letter
was a 'hot' lacquer finish....and it was a bit thicker than I like to
see on a piece.   The refinisher I was using at the time preferred this
method for some reason.   To say the least, I never used his services
after that.

I'm pleased to see more letters about music boxes on the MMD.  It gives
we music box people a chance to get more involved and exchange ideas!

....A response to Peter Neilson's letter about not touching your
friend's music box...  it's a good credo for ANY music box you see...
especially if you are in an auction or antique shop.  Don't even WIND
someone else's music box....a spring can let go at any time, especially
if it has not recently been pulled, cleaned, and had the ends inspected
for tears.
