Reeds and Angelus Player Question
By Stephen Kent Goodman

Hope all of you had a Merry Christmas,

I have a quick question concerning the Angelus Orchestral Piano Player.
The original advertisement indicates that this push-up had two reed banks
that were optionally played along with the piano player mechanism. The
early vacuum stacks used a lot of vacuum, so I would imagine that the
reeds were played by low-pressure (maybe 1.5-3" water gauge). These would
utilize the otherwise expelled air created by the vacuum pumps, and small
playing pneumatics would operate the pallets for them. Is this a fair
guess, not having ever examined one of these players, or did they use
vacuum reeds?

Next question: Does anyone know of a source of low-pressure reeds that
could be used in a similarly constructed chest (assuming pressure reeds
is what Angeles used)?

Thanks for any help! Happy New Year!
