Introduction and Custom Artcase Steinway
By Charles Flaum

Hi Everyone, I'm Charles Flaum, owner of CMF Piano Accessories -- I think
it's pretty obvious what we sell. I'm also a registered piano technician
and have been involved with some player restorations (I did the rebuild-
ing, someone else did the player).

Two years ago I was involved in private auction for a Steinway Art/Custom
Case Player. I'd like to know if anyone has heard of this piano or of
its sale, etc. It was confirmed by Steinway to be one of only two made.
I believe it was based on an "L" model but I can't remember for sure. The
case, walnut, did not have a curved "S" treble side, but was built out so
that it was a straight angle from right past the top of the treble bridge
to the back of the piano.

On the side of the case were raised reliefs of animals and musical instru-
ments, done in seven types of wood and mother of pearl. The top of the
main lid had similar designs; however these were inlays rather than
raised reliefs. The legs were Cabriole and connected (if I remember
correctly) by a lattice. The main player mechanism (which was missing)
would have been housed in a separate cabinet that sort of resembled an
upright miniature coffin. The player in this cabinet would have been
connected to the rest of the player mechanism in the piano by two thick
cables.

The piano needed total rebuilding and obviously I didn't get the piano.
Anyone know anything about it?

[ Welcome to Mechanical Music Digest, Charles; you join a number of
[ other RPTs here, and we sure appreciate the sage advice of you guys.
[ It sounds like the Steinway once had a Duo-Art Concertola. Nifty!!
 [
[ I viewed your pleasant web site. Can you make the cover for the
[ underside of a reproducing piano, with that nice felt material which
 [ muffles air noise?
