MMD Editorial Practices
By John A. Tuttle

Hi everybody, In a world filled with apathetic individuals, it is indeed
sad when those who are willing to freely give advise and opinions find
themselves on the butt end of their own work as a result of comments made
by others who did not participate in the initial effort.

After communicating personally with a major contributor to the MMD,
it has become clear that some changes might be considered. And while
realizing that I am but a small fish in a large pond, I'm hard-pressed to
believe that my concerns are not shared by others.

The questions below are directed to Jody and Robbie but I believe that
more input from digest members is necessary if a meaningful change is to
occur. If they feel that this article is not appropriate for publication
I will understand but I will not be pleased. I hope they will thought-
fully answer these questions and consider the suggested change.

    1. Why do the editors of MMD feel it's necessary to comment on the
content of articles submitted to the digest?

    2. Are they concerned that people will misunderstand the written words?

    3. Can't the editors just edit the publication and not the articles?

    4. Are the comments really necessary?

    5. Isn't it true that most editors use an 'editorial' to present their
own thoughts instead of chopping up the publication with their
interjections?

I know I'm not alone when I state that most of the writers have years of
valuable experience which they are happy to give away but I/we/they don't
appreciate it when the editors put conflicting view points directly under
our hard work. It can directly bias the reader before they've had a
chance to digest the information from their own perspective.

Agreeing with the writer is just as bad because it has the same effect.
Please let people think for themselves and initiate an editorial section
for the editors comments. That's my suggestion.

What's your opinion? I think the editors would like to hear from you.

Musically, John A. Tuttle

[ What's your opinion, folks? The editors would like to hear from you!
[ With no editing the Digest could be an automatic listserver, like
[ pipeorg-l. What changes do you think should be made?
