Introduction
By Richard Vance

It appears that I have omitted, through ignorance of your procedure for
which I beg your pardon, the customary personal introduction.

I have been a player owner since 1954, and have done rebuilding on a
strictly amateur basis since then. Currently my collection consists of
an Ampico grand, a Duo-Art upright, a Themodist-Metrostyle pumper still
in progress, a push-up Pianola, and 2500-plus rolls. I am also working
on a long-term project to complete the installation in my home of an
Aeolian Op. 1036, "13/2" residence pipe organ with 116 note player.
(Think _very_ long-term!)

Professionally, I am a control systems engineer for Kvaerner-Davy in
Pittsburgh, a large industrial contractor which used to build polymer
plants, but now another division serves this industry segment. I know
about the polymer trade as an informed observer, but I am not myself a
chemical engineer.

A few days ago, Mr. Saul asked for my views on polyurethane film failure.
I can't answer with confidence myself; I am now researching the matter in
our Technical Library. Some informative insights have already emerged,
but the complete answer needs more work. Please excuse the delay in
responding.

Concerning editing, Robbie edited my previous submission for clarity and
style, for which I am grateful. As a new member, I find the editorial
comments inserted by Robbie or Jody informative and interesting. This is
the most well-managed web site I have ever visited. Keep up the good
work!

Richard Vance

 [ Editors note:
 [
[ Welcome, Richard, and thanks for the compliment about our 'well-
[ managed web site.' We're reviewing right now the policies, as you
[ know, and so soon it may be even better. Thanks also for your
[ research efforts. If our instruments were built of stainless steel
[ there would be great amounts of information available, but data on
[ rubberized pneumatic cloth and animal glue is hard to find.
 [
[ I placed your text about MIDI conversion in a separate article
[ further down in this Digest. I hope you'll write again on this
 [ interesting topic.
