Restoring Drum Heads
By Don Teach

All the restorers that I know use drum heads made by Remo, and sold at
your local music store. They are called FibreSkin and approach the
appearance and feel of high quality calfskin heads. They may be special
ordered without the Remo name for a more authentic look, or placed on the
drum with the name hidden behind a drum beater. A typical part number
for a 20" bass drum head is FA1520-00 and a 14" head would be FA0514-00.
They do a good job without having to be tuned every time the weather
changes.

For the purist who wants real calfskin heads, the contact is Mr.
Palansky at United Rawhide, 1644 North Ada Street, Chicago IL 60622
tel 312-276-1167 or fax 312-276-9535. They also make covers for pianos
which I believe Schaff sells.
