 Subject: J. C. Deagan Carillon

Jody, I found your Internet site and am asking if you know anyone
who can repair a J. C. Deagan carillon. We have one in our church.
It appears to be in excellent condition, aside from the fact that it
doesn't work!

It has two cabinets, one with rolls that are used to play the hymns.
The other cabinet is metal and has 25 striker rods inside that are
amplified outside. Both cabinets have vacuum tubes. I estimate the
Deagan is probably more than 50 years old. J. C. Deagan Company used to
be here in Chicago, but they've gone out of business, and I've heard that
if I wanted to repair the carillon, I'd have to find a specialist.

The church would want to sell the carillon if it can't be repaired, and
perhaps its parts would be valuable? Could you let me know if you have
any information that would be helpful?

Thanks very much.

Terry, Thanks for your note. I'll forward your note to our readers
tonight for comment. I'll ask that reader's comments be copied to you,
since you aren't a subscriber. If you'd like to be a subscriber (even
temporarily), there's no cost or obligation at this time. If so, send

I hope you'll find a way to restore your carillon. Some of the Deagan
instruments were wonderful. If you decide against restoring it, please
don't let it be hauled away as scrap! I'm sure there's a collector out
there who'd pay real $$'s for it. Sometimes getting an appraisal is
hard, and sometimes it takes some work to market a mechanical musical
instrument, but I'd be patient.
