Baldwin Manualo Modello
By Bob and Sonja Lemon

The Manualo is not the easiest to rebuild. The pneumatics were actually
mounted on a heavy duty layer of pumping cloth. What you thought was
clay or gasket material was actually a decomposed layer of rubber. Remove
all the material from the deck, both sides.

Did you make a scale stick for the pneumatic finger layout? This is
important! All the pneumatics should be numbered and the exact location
of the ends of the fingers must be known before reassembly. Don't assume
that the pneumatics were centered over the holes on the deck, or that the
fingers came straight out. (The last Manualo we rebuilt had pneumatics
placed in such a way as to restrict the air flow. Also the fingers were
obviously not properly aligned with the piano action.)

If you don't already have it, I would suggest you purchase the Reblitz
book on rebuilding players. Player Piano Company also sells "The
Manualo, Care, Regulation, & Repair", the Baldwin Service Manual. There
are many critical steps and adjustments required in rebuilding this
action.

Keep us posted on your progress.
