Folding Bellows Corners
By Karl Petersen

A recent radio news article on the Christian Science Monitor service
noted that Nathan Kane, an MIT grad student, had recently won a prize for
inventiveness for describing mathematically the optimum angles to fold
bellows corners. This included the descriptions of several apparently
new styles of corners, none of which were evident after considerable
research into the patent office records or the ideas of accordions,
cameras, etc.

I recall discussions on the design of pneumatic folds noting the various
practical bellows corners folds, but none of these is technically elegant
or truly simple. What have I missed??

What details have *you* seen that are out of the ordinary and, perhaps,
of some specific advantage?

You can be sure I will communicate this with Nathan Kane (or you can
cc: him) who enthusiastically welcomes news of old art in his research
and development, and hopes that his developments will benefit us all.
