Loose Tuning Pins
By Tom Steuer

Troy Taylor wrote that he has a Melville Clark upright with sloppy pins
and I wanted to respond. There is a product on the market called
"Pintite" that restorers sometimes drop into the pinblock to swell the
wood. It is a quick and easy fix, and initially it works. But a far
superior answer is to restring the string, or even the section, with an
oversize pin, rather than possibly damaging the wood in the pinblock with
a chemical agent.

On another subject -- everyone is so concerned with age -- how old and
how young the respondents are. Enough already. Let's compare the size
of organs, or pianos, or is that a really rank subject?

[ We're just having fun seeing how young this crowd is, Tom. It's
[ a safe bet that our instruments are much older! :-) -- Robbie
