Graduated Pneumatics
By Bob and Sonja Lemon

Craig Broughter told of the Duo-Art graduated pneumatics in MMD 970227.

We have rebuilt two Manualo players with graduated pneumatics. The first,
rebuilt several years ago, had larger pneumatics at both ends of the
stack with shorter ones in the middle.

Bob was _very_ unhappy with the final results. He did not care for the
sound at all. It tended to play the accompaniment as loud as the theme.
The second one, which we rebuilt last year, had an assortment of five
different size pneumatics! We reduced that to two sizes and had much
better performance. We have found the varying sizes only in the _Baldwin
name_ pianos, built by the Baldwin company.

Regarding the Duo-Arts, we always figured that since most of the Duo-Art
pianos did not have varying size pneumatics, the rolls would have been
encoded to work properly on the majority of the pianos.
