"Kelly Tester" Test Roll
By Wayne Stahnke

Yesterday I discovered an 88-note test roll previously unknown to me.
The legend on the roll says simply "Kelly Tester." I scanned and played
the roll; it must be the Mother of All Test Rolls. I have never seen
such heavy keyboard activity, in test rolls or musical material.

Can anyone on the Digest help me learn more about this roll? I do not
have any knowledge of "Kelly" rolls; was this a brand name? The label
on the roll says "Eighty-Eight Note" (spelled out), which leads me to
believe that the roll is early, dating from the period of the changeover
from 65-note rolls. There is no Tempo marking on the roll.

I would appreciate any information about this or other 88-note test rolls
that subscribers to the Digest know about. Eventually I hope to make
exact replicas of one or more of these rolls available, to augment the
meager offerings presently available from roll suppliers. With best
regards,

Wayne Stahnke
