Identifying Music on Barrel or Cylinder
By Angelo Rulli

The name of the book that contains the "up/down" theory of tune
identification is: "The Directory of Tunes and Musical Themes," by Denys
Parsons, Spencer Brown & Co., Cambridge, England, 1975. Long out of
print.

In this book one finds thousands of tunes, including popular and
classical, with their corresponding "u/d" symbols. Also included is a
description of how to use the process in describing most any tune.

I have had marginal results using this method, which is what I would
expect from a marginal musician. One with greater knowledge of theory
and practice would be able to to better. Of course, the u/d method does
nothing to suggest what the tempo might be.

I would be willing to share excerpts of this methodology with anyone who
might be interested.

With the hope that we might, finally, be on the road to addressing one
of the most perplexing of all the aspects of this hobby, that of
identifying the music therein.

Good luck to all of us.
