Identifying Music Box Tunes
By Angelo Rulli

The name of the book that has been referenced in previous digests as
using an "up/down" process is entitled "The Directory of Tunes and
Musical Themes," compiled by Denys Parsons, published by Spencer Brown
&Co., Cambridge, England, 1975. This book is long out of print.

The book includes hundreds of titles with respective "up/down"
indications. It goes on to describe the process by which "any" tune can
be identified. I have had marginal success using this method. Of course,
it only identifies each note in reference to others, i.e., is the
succeed note up or down from the previous. What's amazing is that, as
simple as this method is, it provides amazing results. Of course, it
does nothing to indicate what the tempo of the tune might be.

I would be pleased to share excerpts of this book with any who might be
interested.

As noted in previous Digests, there are few topics of greater interest
to music box and barrel organ enthusiasts than that of identifying the
"lost" titles of the music therein.

Now is the time to see what we can do to address this. Collectively we
can do it.
