Newspaper Marches in Europe
By Jeffrey Borinsky

I'm not sure about newspaper marches (MMD970922) in Europe but Johann
Strauss et al wrote plenty of waltzes polkas etc. for different organ-
isations. In fin-de-siecle Vienna all the trade guilds and other
organisations used to have their balls, and the most glittering were,
by reputation, opera balls.

Just one odd example: "Feuerfest!" (Fireproof!) was written for a company
of safe-makers to publicise their products, and is great fun. Not many
musical works require an anvil in the orchestra. I wonder if there is
piano roll.

I'm sure that MMD's Austrian members will add to this and correct my
errors and omissions.

[ I've heard the "Anvil Chorus" performed on some sort of barrel organ,
[ with an animated figure playing a bell instead of the blacksmith's
[ anvil. Jolly music! -- Robbie
