Burnt Shellac

While making the stuff promotes a spiritual bond with your instrument,
it also tends to require a significant amount of cleaning up and doesn't
smell all that good.  I have been using Indian Head (r) gasket shellac
for this purpose for many years.  Get it from old-timey auto parts
stores.  I think it's the same stuff and it costs about a dollar for
a lifetime supply.
