Calliopes on Riverboats
By Hal Davis

It's nice to welcome Mickey Sadler from Dublin, Ohio. Interestingly
enough, the first riverboat of record that was equipped with a calliope
was the Unicorn on the Ohio River. Within three years an estimated
five thousand riverboats had calliopes on them.

As most of those riverboats sank as a result of striking shoals and
other hidden barriers in the river, it might be expected that there are
many remains of calliopes on river bottoms all over the United States.
It would be interesting to convince some graduate student to research
this as a candidate project.
