Why Bother With Tapered Holes?
By Tim Blyth

In every mechanical organ that I have ever worked on (with the
exception of a few of questionable origin) every pipe foot is tapered
and ALL the holes are plain.

All the pipes or reed boots ALL have tapered wooden feet. Therefore
there is absolutely no point in having a tapered hole. You just firmly
plant the pipe with a light tap. Indeed, in travelling organs it is
necessary to use a light glue mixture, otherwise they will be all over
the place after the first few moves to the next event.
