Pronunciation of "Hooghuys"
By Albert de Boer

Hello Scott. Get ready for a lesson in Dutch.

First, I do not know if there is a phonetical equivalent in English for
the "uy" sound. But I will be getting you close to it so that nobody
would notice the slight difference.

Let's start with "Hoog". The "Hoo" is pronounced just like the "ho" in
the English word "hole". Then add to it the "ch" sound as in Bach, the
composer, or the "ch" sound in the jewish name "Menachem". Make it
good and gutteral, like clearing your throat. No, I am not Jewish,
just Dutch by birth.

The next part "huys" sounds close to the "hois" in the english "hoist".
Not exactly, but close. Now you almost sound "like one of us".

By the way, the literal translation of "Hooghuys", when split into two
words "Hoog" and "huys" is "Tall house", although presently the word
"Huys", when meant "house" is written as "Huis", same pronunciation.

End of lesson. Hope to have been of some help.
