They are computer generated images.   And for you UNIX geeks out there,
all the frames were "rendered" using LINUX on DEC Alpha machines.  The
night, sky, and water during the sinking scenes are computer generated
as well.   Also all the fly-over views of the ship.

Now you know why the Screen Actors Guild is sweating buckets.
