Making the "Killer" Duo-Art Test Roll
By Bernt Damm

Hi folks,

If Tim Baxter wants to make a better test roll for the Duo-Art, I
would like to suggest the following:

The zero adjustment part of the roll should be modified as follows:

Accompaniment zero:

The existing roll is running an appego with pedal and without
pedal to get to the notes to either play or not if the zero level is
correct. This is a problem because only the notes in the appego are
tested and this is not always a good representation of the whole piano.

This section should be modified to run through all the notes from
bass to treble with pedal and without to get a proper zero adjustment.
The zero adjustment is only usable when each piano note can play with
the pedal on at level zero.

What I am saying is that the appego is fine but 70% of all the other
notes don't play at zero with pedal on. This normally results in
notes being skipped in very soft passages. This is caused by the
difference in the mechanical resistance i.e. springs, bushings etc.
from note to note. One often finds that when all the notes can play
at zero, some are too loud and others are just right.

Anyway, I have written about this before. For a perfect piano, the
existing roll will work OK but for a well used/worn in piano my
method is better. It will also point out any "stubborn" notes i.e. too
loud or too soft.

Regards,
