Sinclair Lewis and Mechanical Music
By Damon Atchison

I'm reading the book "Elmer Gantry" by Sinclair Lewis. It was
published in 1927. There is a passage in Chapter 25:

"... however often he yearned for the mechanical pianos and
the girls in pink kimonos of whom he so likerishly preached,
he violently kept away from them."

All in all, the book only mentions mechanical music in the form of the
phonograph. Nobody seems to have a player piano. The current setting
in the book is around 1920-1922.
