Sinclair Lewis and Mechanical Music
By Damon Atchison

In Lulu's apartment in Zenith, she doesn't have a player piano
in the book. It described the room: she didn't even have a phonograph.
She and Ned were poor.

The 1960 movie changed things. In the book, owners of phonographs were
always portrayed as being richer than most. Lulu's apartment was very
cheap with little furnishings.
