Repairing 36-note Thorens Movement
By Werner Grunbaum

[ Re inquiry from new MMDer Melinda Paris in MMDigest 981028 ]

It is difficult to guess what might be wrong with your music box
without seeing it. However, we have see quite a few of these boxes and
repaired some of them. You mention that the box "is stuck."

Check the small gear in the governor assembly. Later Thorens boxes use
a small plastic gear which feeds off the worm gear. The plastic gear
teeth get stripped and the box gets stuck. The gear can be replaced.
However, Thorens no longer makes them. They are available from Tony at
Reuge America in California. However, his answering machine cuts off
before you have an opportunity to leave your telephone number. In any
event, he only does complete repairs and refuses to sell parts. Of
course, you gear make be OK and the trouble could be due to other
factors.

If anyone knows where to obtain these gears, I would be interested in
finding out.

Good luck with your box, Melinda.
