"Totem Tom Tom"
By Art Reblitz

Hi all -- A bit of trivia, after all this discussion of the origin
of the song "Totem Tom Tom" from the musical "Rose-Marie."

The main theme of the Hamm's beer jingle that I remember seeing
and hearing while growing up in Chicago in the 1950s and 60s --
"From the Land of Sky Blue Waters... Hamm's, the Beer Refreshing" --
doesn't draw from "Totem Tom Tom" at all.

I just listened to a tape of "Totem Tom Tom" played on a Hupfeld Pan
orchestrion that we restored in 1989. (Yes, the song was popular in
Germany, too.) If anything, there's a 9-note repeated phrase in the
chorus that might have been used in the _verse_ of an earlier extended
Hamm's jingle, but nothing from the song appears in the chorus of the
most popular version of the jingle.
