I have a keytop Pianomation unit which I run exactly in this way.
What you want to do really quite simple, although you first have to
install a small freeware program called Hubi's MIDI Loopback. This
enables you to share your current MIDI ports with multiple windows
programs.

Hubi's can be found at dozens of locations on the net including

  http://www.sonicspot.com/hubisMIDIloopbackdevice
    /hubisMIDIloopbackdevice.html

Once installed it's very easy to use. Contact me if you need more
help.
