Mechanical Music in Ireland
By Philippe Rouillé

Dear Roger,

In answer to your question about mechanical music in Ireland, and the
precisions given yesterday by Brian Chesters, the only "museum" I was
able to put on my listing in Musica Mecanica is the following one :

> Dunkathel House
> A Georgian house, a few miles east of Cork
> Tel. +353 (021) 821 014
> Good Imhof and Muckle weight-driven cylinder Orchestrion (ca 1870)

I haven't seen it myself, the address and precisions were given to me by a
curator in a Cork Museum.

Just remember that Ireland was for a long time very poor, and that very
poor people have usually other needs than mechanical music ...
Of course, there were a few rich people (mainly English), but probably most
of them took their musical boxes away back to England when Ireland became
independent. (Sorry, I am presenting a rather caricatural summary of Eire's
history !).

Best regards,

Philippe
