Contact Glue
By John Kleinbauer

Glue -- We all have our favorite type !

Hi All, I have been quiet for a while, but when I saw contact
glue being attacked, I just had to jump in! There is a saying:
"Build a better mousetrap and the world will beat a path to your door."
The saying should be "Make a glue that sticks and lasts and you will
own the world".

My father used contact glue on most of his projects. He is gone
fifteen years now and I can honestly report most of the glue has
failed. The paneling is coming off the wall, and strips of Formica
are dropping off the kitchen cabinets. Contact glue was made to be
quick and easy. Contact glue is just as good as the cheap tacky
furniture it holds together.

Now I am going to defend contact glue! When a part falls off the
interior of the car, grab your Contact! Molding on the outside of the
car: Contact! Will it last for ever? No! But it will last just as
long as the glue that failed. We won't even mention the roof coming
down on the inside of the car!

The roller organ I am building now is built from 1/4" gray PVC plastic
and it is held together with size 2-56 screws. The bellows are held on
with contact cement. The bellows are canvas coated with silicone
caulking. My estimate is that the bellows should stay glued for at
least five years.

I don't have any experience with hide glue, but if it is as good as
the glue that holds shoes together then it is good. I was going to
order some hide glue to experiment with but I never got to it. I am
interested in seeing if it will stick to PVC plastic. I used contact
because it was the only glue I found that would glue both canvas and
leather to PVC plastic. I feel most glues work great in certain
situations except "Crazy Glue". Now that is a glue you can pick on!
