"Punch-a-Tune" Plays Self-Punched Paper Strips
By Bill Wineburgh

Hi, all. Sankyo makes two models of punched paper strip musical
movements. Both are hand-cranked, but could be fitted to operate from
a small motor, as does the Mr. Christmas 'continuous' paper strip
musical box.

One Sankyo movement, Model TDM213, plays a 15-note comb and the other,
Model TDM202, plays a 20-note comb. Both use punched paper strips of
different widths and you can purchase additional strips and a hole
puncher as optional items.

You may contact Sankyo Seiki (America) Inc. at 140 Ridgewood Ave.,
Paramus, NJ 07652. Tel (201) 265-8900, FAX (201) 265-4433. Tony
Bernardo is the Director of Sales & Marketing for the Musical Products
Division. I was unable to contact him today for prices, so you'll have
to call yourself.

I'll post an update when I get more details and prices for the items.

Musically yours,

Bill Wineburgh

 [ Editor's note:
 [
[ Evidence is growing that, in different years, different firms have
[ sold the same or similar little music box movements. (The basic
[ 20-note movement seems to be used with both punched discs and the
[ punched paper card strip.) Sankyo Seiki (Hong Kong) Co., Ltd. is
[ marketing the movement now, but only a few years ago it was marketed
[ by Sankyo Shoji Co., Ltd., of Japan.
 [
[ I'd like to know what company (and where) first designed and
[ produced the movement; maybe Tony Bernardo can provide some history.
 [
[ Has it changed any in 30 years? What model numbers appear over the
[ years? What are the model numbers currently in production, which
[ are sold by retail stores around the world? Are there any permanent
[ marks or symbols which uniquely identify the company who fabri-
[ cated the movement, so that the customer can tell if it's "the
[ genuine article" regardless of the name on the paper label?
