Antique Drums for Orchestions and Theater Organs
By D. L. Bullock

There has been some discussion of drums for antique and new instruments.
I thought I would pass on some things I learned from my experiences
restoring Theater organ toy counters. When you find an old drum, DO NOT
throw away anything. If you throw away the old heads AND the flesh
rings as they are called, then you may not be able to replace the heads
easily. It is very likely that your drum is NOT a modern standard size.
As is usually the case it looks like a modern standard; measures to a
modern standard, but when you put the modern standard head in place it
does not quite fit. Often you will be required to send the wood or
metal rings to which the original skin head was glued to the guy that
will put new skins on the old drum. Also find a guy who knows "old
drums." He will be very valuable to you. Never discard any drum parts
as most of them are not made new. How do you think I know this?
