I think this is the "case number". You will find it stamped on a number
of wood parts. Other places you may find it hidden include underneath
one of the piano legs (have to remove it) and underneath the square
block that runs the length of the short folding section of the piano
lid. The Steinway factory maintained a list of case number to serial
numbers, though it may have been passed onto the Smithsonian by now.
